Republican candidate in the 1st District special election Teddy Turner threw off the gloves in a new campaign ad today that features a not-so-thinly veiled attack on Gov. Mark Sanford’s political and personal past, complete with criticism of excessive spending by ‘career politicians.’
“Break up with career politicians,” a female narrator tells viewers after a cheesy, if not sleazy, loose-tied, smooth talking, brandy-sipping actor sitting in a candle-lit room apologizes for “all the mistakes I’ve made.” The attempt at repentance, set to romantic slow jams, dismisses a free-wheeling past, “I know I’ve spent too much, but what’s a few trillion?” the man smirks, “It was all for you, but I’ve changed. I’ll keep my promises this time, it’ll be different.” Before blowing a kiss to the camera, the character leans in to seal the deal, “Sugar, how about one more chance?”
“The right guy? Teddy Turner,” says the narrator cutting to shot of framed photographs of Republican opponents Mark Sanford, Curtis Bostic, Larry Grooms, Chip Limehouse, and John Kuhn, “conservative Republican, economics teacher, not a career politician.”
Turner, the son of media mogul Ted Turner, is a high school teacher at Charleston Collegiate School, a private school on Johns Island.
