Toronto writer MG Vassanji is on tour for his most recent book The Magic of Saida, and he’s gracing the College of Charleston’s African Literature Association with a visit on March 22.
The novel is a magical, heart-breaking story about a successful African-Indian doctor, Kamal Punja, who was a resident of Canada for nearly 40 years until an old regret caused him to take a life-changing journey back to Africa. The story that unfolds is about Punja’s complications with his mixed racial identity and his broken promise to a girl named Saida.
Vassanji is the author of six other novels that have all received awards, including The Gunny Sack, No New Land, The Book of Secrets, and most recently The Assassin’s Song. He is also the author of two short story collections, a travel memoir about his time in India, and a biography of Mordecai Richler.
