The Holy City is about to swept up in a wave of good-for-your-soul soul music, and it couldn’t have come at a better time, what with Easter just behind us and the warm, spirit-reviving days of spring now upon us.
On Sat. April 13 at the Charleston Music Hall, Lee Fields and the Expressions roll into town on as part of the Dig South fest, and former James Brown impersonator Charles Bradley follows with a show on Thurs. April 18 at the Pour House. (You’ll find our story on Fields in next week’s issue.)
As for Bradley, the big-hearted belter just released his sophomore disc, Victim of Love. (“Hurricane” and “Confusion” have the same psych-funk, juicy fruit punch as the Temptations’ “Papa Was a Rolling Stone,” “Cloud Nine,” and “Psychedelic Shack,” and if you’re black power-era aficionado like me, that’s a blaxploitation flick boom-chicka-wow-wow to your ears.) And I’ve got to tell, I think Bradley’s new disc is even better than his 2011 release No Time for Dreaming, which is a retro-soul classic in its own right.
