Michael and Cary Ann are Shovels and Rope

Earlier this month, the Americana Music Association (AMA) announced its 2013 award nominees, and Charleston darlings Shovels and Rope made it onto the list — four times. Their 2012 release O’ Be Joyful is up for album of the year, with the track “Birmingham” nominated for song of the year. They also got nods for emerging artist of the year and duo/group of the year. They’re up against acts like the Lumineers, JD McPherson, and Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell in the various categories, but let’s face it: The last 12 months have really been the year of Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent.

“We are surprised and excited to be nominated for some awards by the Americana Music Association,” the band told the City Paper in a statement. “They’ve been very supportive and helpful to Shovels & Rope and it’s an honor to be included in this event with some of our favorite artists.”

The annual Americana Honors and Awards takes place on Sept. 18 in Nashville. We wish Shovels and Rope luck. And we also wish that they come home soon, so we can see ’em again.
