One of the Holy City’s most popular up-and-coming bands, Old You, is readying their latest album Whale Noises, and although a release date has yet to be finalized, singer Young-Mi Feldsott and the gang will drop a preview EP of sorts in August. According to drummer John Pope, Old You plans to hit the studio again to track two new tunes, in addition to the ones they recorded recently.
“Recording in a studio has taken out a lot of the technological limitations we had when recording at home for the So Steady sessions, so I think our fans will be very pleased with the new sound,” Pope says, noting that band has been dabbling with “jazzy chord changes.”
So far, Pope believes one track in particular will be a crowd-pleaser. “I think people will really respond to ‘Hearts Come and Go,’ which was actually one of the first songs we ever wrote,” he says. “‘It starts of quietly with just vocals and guitar, but builds into a very powerful instrumental outro with big drums and soaring guitar licks.”
The drummer is also pleased with “New Girlfriend,” a jazz-jam number with a splash of middle-finger soul (You can hear a live version of it on the band’s home page). Pope says, “It’s built around a very simple repetitive bass line over a hip-hop drum beat. It also includes a nice instrumental break with some jammy guitar.”
