Summertime is vacation time, which is awesome — except when you continue to spend like you’re on vacation months after you’ve returned. Let us help you get back into the land of budgets with this week’s list of free events happening around town.
Monday — If you’re feeling up for some acoustic serenading in some waterfront settings, check out one of the two Chrises tonight. Chris Boone will be strumming at the Shelter by Shem Creek, while Chris Tidestrom will be crooning at Coconut Joe’s on IOP.
Tuesday — The main library will be broadcasting Il Barbiere di Siviglia as part of the MET Opera Encore series.
Wednesday — For all you MLB wannabes out there, take your first step toward replacing A-Rod. Well, not exactly, but you can join the Yankee’s minor league team on the field. Riverdogs players and Play4Health are hosting some fitness activities, and those that participate in the free morning clinic will get a discounted ticket to that night’s game. Why not get your seventh inning stretch started a little early?
Thursday — Pups, Yups, and Food Trucks is back at Palmetto Park for an evening full of furry play pals, yummy treats (for you and your pet), and live music. It’s free with park admission.
Before you’re face gets attacked by doggie kisses, be sure to check out ways to keep your wrinkles away, so you don’t end up looking like your shar-pei. For a lesson on how to keep your face looking fresh, go hear Marcelo Hochman, MD talk about surgical and nonsurgical options.
View some art without paying for a ticket to the Gibbes. It’s Hilary Siber’s opening reception for her latest collection, which explores giving shape and form to eternal and heavenly moments.
There’s also the family-friendly film Here Comes the Boom at Freshfields Village.
Friday — Hear some free live music at Home Team BBQ when Whiskey Diablo takes the stage. Or perhaps Porter and the Dudes is more your style at Mex 1.
Saturday — It’s the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and to celebrate, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Gospel Choir and Spiritual Ensembles will be performing a free show at the Morris Street Baptist Church.
To help a worthy cause and feel “Born to be Wild,” join Emily’s Ride for PACE. Attendees are asked to bring school supplies for PACE Academy and then go on a motorcycle ride to bring the donations to the school. The ride is free; school supplies are on sale. 1-cent notebooks at Staples shouldn’t break your budget.
Enjoy music by the sea at the last concert in the Summer Concert Series at the Sanctuary at Kiawah.
Sunday — It’s Patrick Swayze’s birthday party at the Tin Roof, and you don’t even need an invitation to get in. Be sure to participate in some dirty dancing to celebrate. And although it’s not entirely free, stop by the party a little early with some clothes you want swap, pay $1, and shop at the Re-Trend Clothing Swap.
