Indie rocker Nathan Hussey has taken some time away from his frontman position for Charleston band All Get Out to release his first solo album, Ground Me. Right now, you can listen to the album on Hussey’s Bandcamp page. The collection should be on iTunes and Spotify within the next couple of days.
Although Hussey wrote the majority of Ground Me while on tour with All Get Out over the past few years, he recorded and mixed the album’s 10 tracks during a home-stay downtown in June. Then he got the disc mastered at Archer Avenue Studio in Columbia. For Hussey, the solo disc was a show of independence. “I needed a way to get music out without waiting for labels and record cycles and all that comes with it,” Hussey says.
The album features a rough-around-the-edges, emotion-laced sound reminiscent of older Andy Lehman and Carter Hulsey, especially with tracks “Ravenel,” “Intervention,” and “Neat.” Meanwhile, more hit-worthy numbers like “No One” and “Angry Men” have a certain latter-day Modest Mouse feel. Over the course of Ground Me, the singer-songwriter traffics in mellow, layered acoustics, raw vocals, and even rawer lyrics. “The mood ranges from hopeless to sadistic to in love to sarcastic,” Hussey says. “It’s a very broad spectrum of moods but mostly just stories that represent all sides of your humanity, even the less talked about ones.”
