We reported several weeks ago that Shepard Fairey and Jasper Johns would be mounting a show at the Halsey Institute in honor of the institution’s 30th anniversary next year. And while details are still slow in coming, we did talk with the Halsey’s Mark Sloan about the show and what we can expect.
Fairey, who grew up in Charleston but lives in Los Angeles, has been in the Holy City twice in the past year (once recently) to scout possible mural locations with Sloan, Sloan says. “We have identified more that 30 possibilities, ranging from quite small to a wall over 100 feet long. We do not yet know how many pieces he will be creating in the public sphere, but he will be bringing a crew with him from Los Angeles for three weeks leading up to the opening on May 22.”
Sloan can’t disclose any of the potential spots for Fairey’s work as they are in the process of getting permission for the murals, but he did send us a couple of shots from the recent scouting trip.
The Halsey has commissioned filmmaker Brett Novak to film a documentary about Fairey’s installation. Novak is also the filmmaker behind this beautiful video on Motoi Yamamoto’s salt installation, which was part of Spoleto 2011 and commissioned by the Halsey.
