It’s no mistake that Rocktoberfest, an annual celebration of beer and South Carolina music at the Tattooed Moose, takes place in September. The German festival from which it derives its name actually begins in September, so this one-night shindig is true to the original.
Now in its third year, the tradition continues on Sept. 28 with beer specials and a killer lineup of bands including Mechanical River, Punks & Snakes, Sans Jose, Mr. Jenkins, Can’t Kids, Sarah Bandy, Boring Portals, the Itchy Hearts, Gold Light, and Post-Cobra. Joel Hamilton, the musical wizard behind Mechanical River, was put in charge of curating the bands, and the show should make for a fascinating Whitman’s Sampler of indie and avant-garde acts. Hamilton won City Paper Music Awards in 2012 for Multi-Instrumentalist of the Year and Experimental Artist of the Year.
Tattooed Moose General Manager Suzanne Stone says that, since opening the restaurant, she’s tried to incorporate her love of music whenever possible, from Tuesday night gigs to the ever-expanding Rocktoberfest, which started out as a showcase for Shrimp Records but has since expanded to include bands not on the label. “It’s an intimate crowd of people that come every year,” Stone says. “It’s not crazy, and it hasn’t been obscene amounts of people or anything. It’s all just kind of small and heartfelt.”
All-day drink specials will include summer beers, hefeweizens, and a few Octoberfest brews, and the kitchen will be cooking up a German-style plate of some sort. The music starts at 7 p.m., and, as usual, there will be no cover charge.
