Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Jason Isbell will play a show Mon. March 24 at the Charleston Music Hall. Advance tickets are $25 and go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m. The opening act will be Mississippi songwriter Cory Branan.
The last time Jason Isbell came to Charleston, he laid waste to the Pour House. The crowd packed the James Island venue wall to wall as Isbell churned through the songs off his 2013 album Southeastern. Even in the packed room, people shut up for the quiet songs and roared with cheers when he sang, “I sobered up/ And I swore that stuff/ Forever this time.” Isbell’s Charleston-area shows have a local hook, too: Sadler Vaden, a Summerville native who played for years in the Charleston scene, is now a guitarist in Isbell’s backing band.
Isbell performed for a few years with the Drive-By Truckers and has since established himself as a singer of muscular, gritty story songs for electric guitar and Southern rock band. The characters in his songs include cancer patients, murdering vagabonds, and veterans struggling to re-enter civilian life.
