It’s easy to understand the greater historical significance of major events, but sometimes it helps to get a local, more personal perspective. Case in point: Harvey Gantt, the Charlestonian who integrated Clemson University in January 1963. And as part of SCETV’s black history month celebration, a documentary about Gantt’s journey will air on Fri. Feb. 7 at 8 p.m.
The Education of Harvey Gantt traces Gantt’s life from Charleston to Clemson and his eventual role as Charlotte’s first African-American mayor. Narrated by Phylicia Rashad — yes, Claire Huxtable from The Cosby Show — the documentary includes interviews with Gantt himself as well as historians Dr. Vernon Burton and Dr. Bobby Donaldson as they trace Gantt’s monumental life.
