Update: An earlier version of this post noted Palmetto Carriage Company officials’ comment on the incident to local media, but the carriage and horse involved was not a Palmetto carriage. The post has been adjusted accordingly.
At this point, you’ve probably heard about the carriage horse that managed to crash into the City Market near the corner of Anson and Market Street on Tuesday afternoon. Today, scary new video released to local media shows the draft horse running free down Anson Street as its driver struggles to regain control.
Benjamin Doyle, manager at Palmetto Carriage Company, which was not involved in the incident, told ABC News 4 that the horse likely became spooked when it pulled free of its bridle along with its blinders, causing it to bolt away from its Anson Street feeding area toward the tourist-heavy Market Street area. Doyle says the driver, with four passengers still in the carriage, did everything they could as the horse started its run, but without the bridle and the bit to control it, there’s little they could have done.
Live 5 News and ABC report that neither the passengers nor the horse was seriously injured, and that the company involved says it’s going through the necessary channels to take care of any property damage from the incident.
