Avondale caffeine junkies shall thirst no more now that Classic Coffee has arrived. Nestled between Strawberry Blonde Salon and Al Di La, the beautifully refurbished coffee shop, complete with leather sofas and a coffee bar, officially opened for business on Monday.
Winter Fox and Jeff Corbett bought the space back in July and have since jumped through a hoop or 10 to get things going. While the legalities got ironed out, they spent their time well, perfecting their craft and delving deep into the world of roasting coffee beans. Both trained chefs, it wasn’t long before they emerged with their four official brewed blends: Avondale, Classic’s House, Sunrise Breakfast, and Classic’s Mocha. They’ll also always have at least one single origin blend available, such as their current Ethiopia Yirgichefe and Java Taman Dadar. Smoothie specials are on the blackboard daily, and their frappes machine can whip up summer treats so good “it’s like ice cream,” Fox tells us.
As for food, the shop has teamed up with Mud Pie Girl Bakery for breakfast items, plus sweets like cakes and pies. You can also get bagels, croissants, muffins, and such, all sourced from Saffron Bakery. Once things are more settled, sandwiches and salads will be on the menu, too.
The owners met while working on the set of Army Wives, where for years they’d stand next to the coffee station playing around with ideas to do their own thing. “It was always just a pipe dream,” says Fox, a film-industry veteran of 30 years.
When friends ask why they finally went for it, Corbett tells them, “When an opportunity comes knocking, sometimes you just have to jump off the cliff. There’s no time to figure it out. You just jump and hope the parachute works.”
