During a sound check at the College of Charleston Cistern Yard, we got a chance to see Kat Edmonson at work. It was a revelation.

For all the “waifish” appeal of her singing voice, the artist seems pretty — well, “fierce” is the surprising word that comes to mind. Fiercely her own woman on stage and in her repertoire.

We may have walked in expecting a fluffy bit of Blossom Dearie, what we found was more Edith Piaf (only, you know, without the tragedy).

As we discovered later in the evening at Edmonson’s performance, there’s nothing quite like it. Or her.
