Let’s be honest, no one says tomahto on this side of the Atlantic. But that isn’t stopping Mixson Market from celebrating the tastiness of the fruits with their Tomayto Tomahto contest this weekend. On Sat. June 28 the Park Circle shop hosts a tomato pie contest, and all bakers are invited to contend. Just bring your best pie to Mixson on Saturday, along with a printed out recipe, and register by 12:30 p.m.

Starting at 1 p.m., contestants will be judged in three categories: 1) best all-around, 2) best use of ingredients, and 3) most unique recipe. The panel includes a ragtag crew of tom-appreciators like Channel 4 meteorologist Tom Crawford; CropUp’s Elizabeth Beak, chef Laurie Erickson who you may recognize from appearances on Dr. Oz; and Blanche Weathers, wife of state Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers.

While the heart of the event is the contest, Tomayto Tomahto will also be celebrating all things tomato related with live music, complimentary tomato-inspired samples from various restaurants, and Bloody Marys from Fat & Juicy. The winners will be announced at 2 p.m. and a portion of all proceeds benefits GrowFood Carolina.
