A 25 million year old winged animal fossil found during the excavation for the Charleston airport in 1983 and housed at the Charleston Museum, recently named Pelagornis sandersi for the former curator of the museum, had a wingspan up to 24 feet and could be the largest flying bird to ever live. Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin and N.C.-based law firm Parker Poe Adams and Bernstein have quietly cut ties, with Benjamin adding in comments to The State that the departure was voluntary. Benjamin’s name came up throughout the trial for convicted racketeer Jonathan Pinson, which ended last week. Though Benjamin has not been charged with any crimes, FITS News says he’s heard some Parker Poe clients were “extremely disturbed” by some of the news out of the case. [The State, FITSNews]
Former Chalreston Aviation Authority director Sue Stevens has settled a discrimination suit with her former employer for $270,000, to be paid to Stevens by the agency, AIG insurance company, and the state’s Insurance Reserve Fund. [P&C]
A trial between the national Episcopal Church and Diocese of South Carolina, which split from the national church, is underway today, with much of the dispute over about a half-billion dollars in property across the Lowcountry, including St. Michael’ss and St. Philip’s churches downtown. [P&C, AP]
