The WCIV News 4 team recently got their hands on SLED’s report on the death of Denzel Curnell following an encounter with Charleston Police Department Officer Jamal Medlin. As I write this, a member of news team has just left SLED headquarters with the document. However, News 4 has put up two posts on the matter, both of which offer new — and I would say important — details about the investigation. According to one WCIV report,
EMS personnel told investigators they saw Charleston firefighters roll Curnell over and saw a silver handgun, later identified as the stepfather’s Armscor 206 .38 Special, under Curnell’s body along with an unspent shell casing.
Channel 4 also notes:
In fact, one of the crime scene technicians for the department processed Medlin’s weapon and clothes for
evidence.
WCIV also reports:
In regards to the apartment complex’s surveillance footage, the property manager was unable to provide investigators with any footage of the incident. The video shows the approach of the officer at 10:27 p.m. and then jumps to the arrival of other CPD units at 10:32. She also told investigators that Medlin had been working there for over two years and they have never had a problem with him.
