This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Charleston Pride Fest, celebrating the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and intersex individuals. And the Park Circle Film Society is getting involved once again with Pride Film Night, a screening of 11 LGBT short films on Aug. 5. at 7 p.m. Each film highlights LGBT-related issues and raises awareness about the challenges members of those communities face.
The films of the night include Barrio Boy by Dennis Shinners, which demonstrates the trials of a Brooklyn barber whose race and macho upbringing makes it difficult for the barber to tackle certain truths, even after he falls for a handsome Irish customer. The documentary How Do You Know? from Renae Barnard explores the social and psychological dynamics of such seemingly simple questions as, “What is a woman, and how do I know if I am one?” Other films will explore issues such as coming of age, racial profiling, straying from one’s upbringing, how to control one’s own identity, and having an LGBT friend or family member.
In the comedic category is Sam Berliner, a Pride vet, with the film Genderbusters. Berliner’s film tells the tale of the Gender Evolution Revolution and the work to resolve the gender-binary dilemmas of San Francisco. Fawzia Mirza and Ryan Logan will also be making their second appearance at the Pride Film Night with One Night Stand, a comedy about two women who get more than they bargain for after a night of hooking up.
