The proposed Chicken Salad Chick may have flopped (the restaurant was supposed to open in the old Andolini’s), but Wentworth Street is still about to get new eats. Circe’s Grotto, a sandwich shop, will open at 85 Wentworth St. mid-September. Turns out the restaurant is the second location for Susan Stella’s Scituate, Mass. deli.
“My son went to College of Charleston and we fell in love with the city on our many visits,” says Stella. Now Nick, her son, will run the Holy City off-shoot.
A peek inside revealed a dramatic transition from the former home of Elizabeth Carlton Pottery. Two tables with bright red stools line the windows. At the back, a corrugated metal counter appears to stand below chalkboards. There’s a drink cooler against the right wall.
The menu offers classics like grilled cheese, tuna, and BLT sandwiches. Stella says Circe’s turkey melt with cheddar, red onion, avocado, and red pepper mayo is their signature dish. There’s also four simple salads like mixed greens with dried cranberries, gorgonzola, apple, and walnuts. And, for those bemoaning the loss of the chicken salad emporium, Circe’s does offer a turkey salad sammie with tarragon mayo.
“We make fresh comfort food. Sandwiches like your grandma made them,” says Stella.
With all dishes under $10, it looks like Circe’s will appeal to both the palate and the pocketbook of CofC diners and beyond.
