Each year, the Gibbes Museum of Art and Society 1858, a young Gibbes patrons fundraising group, award the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art to an artist living and working south of the Mason-Dixon line. This year, seven artists made the short list: Jim Arendt, Sonya Clark, André Leon Gray, Jackson Martin, Jason Mitcham, Damian Stamer, and Stacy Lynn Waddell. We’ve been posting short Q&As with each artist leading up to the announcement of the winner, which happens tonight at the 1858 Prize Party at the Vendue Inn.

Stacy Lynn Waddell is a painter and mixed-media artist who works in watercolor, collage, and fire — many of her works are created with branded or burned paper, resulting in sepia-toned creations that quietly evoke the past. She’s exhibited in many museums along the East Coast, including the Gibbes in 2010, and was one of the Oxford American‘s “100 Under 100: The New Superstars of Southern Art,” a list compiled in 2012.

Waddell was unable to answer our questions due to a busy travel and exhibition schedule, so we’re just posting one of her works below. You can see more at stacylynnwaddell.com
