Does Charleston need more tequila, tacos, and mole? We suppose that depends on how wicked your Cinco de Mayo hangover is this morning. But for former Indaco chef Robert Berry and Alley owner Jimmy Poole, the new business partners think so. They announced this morning that the now-defunct Zappo’s Pizza site at 708 King St. will become Pancito & Lefty, a new Mexican restaurant. (The name is a nod to Willie Nelson and Merle Hagard’s song “Pancho & Lefty,” which was written by the late, great Townes Van Zandt.)

Berry and Poole are in the process of renovating the former dive into a colorful space with the help of B. Berry Interiors. And much like Brock and the team behind Minero, the Pancito & Lefty pair will head to Mexico on a fact-finding trip, “where they will sip and savor their way through the country’s capital in search of inspiration for the menu.” The restaurant will make the fourth downtown Mexican-style eatery in the works in the last year, joining the aforementioned Minero, French/Mexican Southern Charm project Generalísimo, and the recently opened Apartment A.  

In a press release, Berry says, “The Lowcountry grows very similar produce to what’s found in Mexico. I’m excited to work with local farmers and purveyors to source ingredients while still honoring classic Mexican flavors.”

Poole adds, “Pancito & Lefty is all about fun. It’s going to be a neighborhood spot with a unique atmosphere, perfect for grabbing a cocktail and enjoying creative Mexican food.”
