Charleston is home to all kinds of promising youngsters, but two special ones were recently brought to our attention: Satya Tranfield, an 11-year-old ballet dancer, and Caleb Borick, a 12-year-old pianist.

Satya recently won a gold medal in the pre-competitive age division at the Youth America Grand Prix, an international ballet competition for dancers ages nine to 19 that awards scholarships to some of the world’s best ballet schools. Satya’s gold medal earned her scholarships to study with the National Ballet School of Canada, the Staatsballett Berlin, the American Ballet Theatre, and the Houston Ballet.

Borick, a homeschooled seventh-grader, was recently selected to compete in the International Piano e-Competition’s e-Piano Junior Competition. In June, he’ll travel to Minnesota to compete against 24 other young pianists (under the age of 17) from around the world. The “e” in e-Piano refers to the Yamaha Disklavier reproducing piano, a piano that records the pianist’s every keystroke and pedal movement, while taking a synchronized video of the performance. This lets pianists audition virtually from anywhere in the world — anywhere, at least, where there’s a Disklavier.

Caleb will also be performing with the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra at Carnegie Hall this summer, and he’ll play the Grieg Piano Concerto with the Ocean City Pops in Ocean City, N.J.
