Back in August Candice Padgett opened her colorful Ragamuffin Sugarshop at 4245 Rivers Ave. Now she and husband Lee have announced they’re ready to expand. By the end of the summer the space will be home to both Candice’s cupcakes, cookies, and candies, as well as her husband’s Iron Dog Diner.
“It will be upscale diner food,” says Lee. The chef worked for 17 years for Outback Steakhouse before moving to Anson. A year prior to Anson’s fire he joined the kitchen of the Daniel Island Club and has been there ever since. Now he’s ready to go independent and the couple plans to make Iron Dog a comfortable breakfast, lunch, and dinner spot with room for a chef’s table as well.
“We’ll serve soups and salads, tuna melts, a monte cristo, and roast beef sandwiches,” he says. For dinner Lee plans to serve classics like a steak burger, fried chicken, shrimp and grits, and a ribeye. The chef’s table idea, Lee hopes, will give him an opportunity to offer more upscale fare with an evolving menu.
“And we’ll have a kids carnival menu,” he adds. “It will have things that adults like too like homemade corndogs, poutine, various flatbreads, and we’ll do a chicken leg like a turkey leg.”
The couple will be renovating over the summer, but Lee says Ragamuffin regulars can still come in for Candice’s homemade lemon tarts and Charleston Chews throughout the construction.
