The first Awakening unleashed artists throughout 1600 Meeting, where they transformed the building into a huge living art installation; Awakening II: Fieldwork, took the art and artists outside; and now Awakening III: Solstice is taking over a vacant lot in front of the Dixie Furniture Warehouse at the corner of Huger and Hanover streets, turning it into a group art project with a mural by the world-renowned muralist Sergio Odeith as its cornerstone.

And we mean that both literally and figuratively: Odeith is known for his corner paintings, which he can make appear almost 3D. Here’s a photo of the one he did for Solstice:

The artists participating in Solstice will add their own work on either side of Odeith’s. They’ll be installing their work all this week and the public is invited to stop by and watch. The event itself takes place this Saturday from 4-8 p.m. — check out this week’s Calendar section in the paper for more.
