A placid watercolor painting on the cover of this week’s New Yorker remembers the nine Charleston worshippers killed this week as they studied scripture at Emanuel AME Church.
The cover, which shows nine birds in flight over the monolithic steeple of Mother Emanuel, was illustrated by regular New Yorker artist Barry Blitt.
“It’s distressing contemplating another story like this,” Blitt told the magazine. His illustration, “Nine,” will appear on the front of the June 29 issue. Writers for the NY-er have already penned thoughtful reflections on the shootings throughout this week.
“But not really surprising, I guess,” he concluded.
