The third annual Charleston Beer Week (Sept. 13-19) is upon us and with it comes 42 brewski-centric events for your imbibing pleasure. But, golly, what to choose? With help from a few of our favorite beer nerds — a handful of the women from Charleston’s Beer Social Club (who we profiled last year) — here are their top picks.
Beer + Sushi = Mmm
“I’m excited about the Carolina Brewery/Kanpai Omakase dinner for two reasons,” says Beer Social Club member and Eater editor Erin Perkins. “One: because I’m a UNC-Chapel Hill grad who was weaned on Carolina Brewery beer. Two: because I’ve always been fascinated with chef Sean Park and his work at Kanpai. Park consistently puts out some of the best sushi around. It’s a bit pricey, but I’m taking that as a sign that we’re in for a treat.”

Tap Takeovers
“So many of the tap takeovers are focused on South Carolina beer, which maybe is the point, but the Allagash takeover and some of the others are particularly appealing since it’s likely we’ll taste beer we normally can’t find in these parts,” says Liz Lantz. For her money Lantz suggests checking out Barrel Aged Beer Night at Coleman Public House. Guests will get to eight barrel-aged offerings from Allagash, Anderson Valley, New Belgium, and Stone.

Where’s the beef?
If this summer’s barbecue pop-up series with pitmaster John Lewis wasn’t enough for you, there’s another round of ‘cue to be had. Amy Carter is heading to Lewis Barbecue & Jester King Brewery’s Brew Cellar event on Sun. Sept. 13. Lewis Barbecue’s giant beef rib will be served with a variety of Jester King pours. Also, ticket holders will get the first stab at buying any extra bottles and Lindsay Holler will be performing live.

“You can also try Jester King at the Where the Wild Things Are tap takeover at Revelry on Wed. starting at 6 p.m.,” adds Carter. “This is my top pick of the week. It’s pay as you go and will feature beers from Against The Grain, Green Bench, Jolly Pumpkin, Green Man, Jester King Brewery, & Revelry. I can’t wait for this one. All my wild and sour ale dreams will come true at this event (and word is they will have $10 charcuterie and cheese boards to go with the beers).”

Feeling Crafty?
“I’m most looking forward to the She’s Crafty event at Craftsmen Kitchen & Tap House on Wednesday,” says Leah Miller. “The evening will serve as a fundraiser for the Center for Women, which is a nonprofit organization providing support to women in Charleston. For this night, seven breweries around town have come up with special recipes to share.” Miller, also a member of BREWSTERs — an all female brewing organization in Charleston — is especially pumped because many of the breweries created these recipes for the BREWSTER Brewing events. “I’m excited to not only sample some of the beers I’ve helped brew, but to also try the beers made by other women, all while supporting the Center for Women, who does such great work here,” she says.

Turtle Power!
Jenny Ferrara has put Drink Beer, Save Turtles! on her must attend list. Why? Two words: Turtle Ambassadors. “Holy City has a great space and great beer and there will be large turtles walking around the brewery,” she tells us. That’s right. The Turtle Survival Alliance will have real life turtles roaming the brewery for you to enjoy as you imbibe which is way cooler than the most recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot.
