Alt-country band the Vagabond Union have an EP hot off the press, their first in four years.
Entitled Blood Runs Through, the new collection is also the first record since original members John Kenney (of the Royal American fame) and Dave Hedeman decided to form a full band. The album was recorded with Washington D.C. producer Tony Alany and is expected to officially drop with an album-release show later this fall — although you can pick up a copy now at the Royal American. “We plan to release three five-song EPs in the next two years,” Kenney says.
Kenney’s previous band Rotoglow had quite the heyday in the 2000s, opening an Outkast gig on the Stankonia Tour, playing on the Vans Warped Tour in 2001, and supporting acts like Everclear, Joan Jett, and Cracker.
For Kenney, this latest venture is proving to be a rewarding experience, too. “It’s much different these days,” Kenney says. “Years ago, we were broke, trying to get signed, living on the road, and our lives depended on making records and touring. I still feel the same importance regarding the musical side of things today, but I don’t feel the pressure I used to. The goal today isn’t to sell a bunch of records and get a deal. What we’re doing is for ourselves, and if people like it, great. If not, that’s OK too.”
