If you just can’t wait to get your Spoleto fix until next spring, you’re in luck. Next Sat. Dec. 12 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at 208 Coming St., Spoleto hosts a pop-up art show featuring Jonathan Green’s design sketches from the 2016 production of Porgy & Bess, an opera that tells the story of a disabled black beggar living in Charleston in the 1930s.
Jonathan Green, a Beaufort native and visual designer, most recently participated in this year’s Piccolo Spoleto, presenting a lecture and slideshow of Lowcountry-focused work. Green, drawing from his extensive Gullah and African American historical knowledge, has designed both the set and costumes for next year’s Porgy & Bess.
In an interview with Paul Bower’s earlier this year Green describes himself as a radical artist, “There are ways of being sort of, quote-unquote, radical and also being a spokesperson and also telling a very uncomfortable story that still exists today. And sometimes you have to do that through beauty.”
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of sketches will benefit the Spoleto Festival and the Porgy & Bess production. You can check out all of the available sketches here.
