If you’re like us, you’ve been awaiting the final word on Blind Tiger’s closing. Brace yourselves — owner Lisa Brown says the beloved Broad Street bar will officially close this Sat. Jan. 23.
When Brown told us about the impending closure in September, the bar owner was more than a bit perturbed with her landlords — attorney Simms McDowell owner 36 Broad St. and developer Mike Shuler owner of 38 Broad St. — who co-own the building. Brown told City Paper that due to a clause in her lease agreement, if McDowell didn’t renew, Shuler wouldn’t either.
Now Shuler, a co-owner of Midtown, says he has control of the entire building, and Brown sounds at peace with that. “As soon as they vacate the property, we’ll begin moving forward,” says Shuler who has plans to clean up the space and reopen it.
He wouldn’t comment on what he plans to call it, but suggests the new incarnation will keep Blind Tiger’s speakeasy appeal. Whether it does or not will be for loyalists to decide, of course. For now, those who want to give the Tiger they know and love a final toast have five days to stop by beginning tomorrow.
“We’ll be open all week. We’re going to have this guy Pork Chop come and play, and there’s also a piano player who wanted to come,” says Brown of the nightly entertainment. Also, lunch is still available beginning at 11 a.m. each day this week.
“People can also still sit on the back patio. We’ve got the Christmas lights still up out there,” says Brown. “There’s still plenty of liquor, bottled beer, and house red and white wine to be had.
The Tiger’s last call will be at 11 p.m. this Saturday.
