With record amounts of snowfall crippling the East Coast, the effects of winter storm Jonas had a different impact on the Lowcountry.
As a result of travel bans and canceled flights related to the storm, two headliners for the Charleston Comedy Festival were unable to make it to Charleston. Performances by comedians T.J. Miller and Todd Barry set for Jan. 23 were canceled, but festival organizers say they are working with the stand-ups’ agents to rebook the shows as soon as possible. The stand-up competition winners — Jeremy McLellan, Mike Goodwin, and Deshawn Mason — will be opening for Todd Barry at the rescheduled show.
Miller’s performance at the Sottile Theatre was sold out in advance, and organizers say that tickets for Barry’s show were going fast before the performance was canceled. Tickets to these shows will be refunded in full.
Comedian Mark Kendall’s flight was canceled on Friday, so bawdy musical act Reformed Whores went on in his place, along with silent sketch artist Conversations with Body Language. Fortunately, Kendall was able to arrive in Charleston on Saturday for a performance at Theatre 99.
While a couple of the festival’s main acts were unable to make it to Charleston, organizers say that overall sales were strong, with sold-out shows at Redux Contemporary Art Center, Woolfe Street Playhouse, and Theatre 99.
