Today, we’re getting a sneak peek at the debut single from the Very Hypnotic Soul Band, the dynamic group that came together following the tragic events of the last year across our city.

VHSB’s “Inhale” is the first single we’ve heard from their upcoming album, 16EP. The hybrid soul-hip hop group features McKenzie Eddy, Elliott A. Smith, Quentin Ravenel, and Jimmie Choate, with Benjamin Starr providing the flow. Hear more from Starr on his 2015 album, Free Lunch.

The group doesn’t shy away from the context of the band’s formation for the Hi Harmony benefit concert, which took place last year after the Emanuel AME shooting and the killing of Walter Scott. “We wrote this song about refusing to live in denial of one another’s experiences,” the VHSB crew says. Eddy, Smith, and Starr recorded 16EP with Wolfgang Zimmerman.

You can see Very Hypnotic Soul Band in action on July 29 at the Pour House with She Returns From War and Marcus Amaker.
