If you haven’t noticed, the visual arts in Charleston are thriving. And the general public gets to experience this array of artistic talent for as little as zero buckaroos. This weekend, between oyster roasts, March Madness, and early St. Paddy’s day festivities, indulge your creative side at one (or all!) of these four events.
FRIDAY
George Gallery, 50 Bogard St.
Focus In
5-8 p.m.
The George Gallery’s Focus In exhibit features the work of three distinct contemporary artists, all based in Charleston. Alan Jackson is an architect by day; his oil on wood pieces are carefully drafted and laid out in precise grids. Kate Long Stevenson presents new paintings that are fluid, colorful abstract/figurative hybrids. Greg Hart’s new pieces are emotionally demanding and political, focusing on issues of racial tensions in the South, particularly in Charleston. The exhibit will be on display through March 31.
Fabulon Center for Art and Education, 1017 Wappoo Rd.
We the People
5-8 p.m.
Fabulon’s Susan Irish has gathered more than 20 artists for We the People, exhibiting mixed mediums addressing issues of race and inclusion in today’s America.
SATURDAY
The Southern’s Saturday, March 11 opening combines two exhibits, Fatal Links and After Midnight in the Dynasty.
SUNDAY
During Second Sunday on King, swing by Hagan Fine Art gallery between noon and 2 p.m. to watch Olessia Maximenko create an original oil painting live. Maximenko is known for her Lowcountry depictions, from boats to marsh life to palms and flowers.
