Three area establishments have joined forces to create a truly local experience: A beer brewed in Charleston created specifically for warm weather drinking on Shem Creek.

Next week, Revelry Brewing is releasing Up Sh*m Creek, an India Pale Lager that will be sold in 12-ounce cans and on draft exclusively at Red’s Ice House and Tavern & Table. The beer is a pilsner-style lager that is dry-hopped with loads of citra creating a crisp and light beer that comes in at 5 percent ABV.

The collaboration started when Skipper Kress, the beverage director at Red’s, decided he wanted a locally brewed “summer boat beer” to be sold at the restaurant. Tavern & Table, which has the same owners as Red’s, also wanted in on the project.

“The challenge was figuring out how to make the perfect beer for both restaurants,” Revelry’s Sean Fleming said. “Skipper wanted the approachable summer option that oozed local craft. Jeff Condon from Tavern & Table wanted to make sure that the beer wasn’t predictable stylistically, but still fit the bill as the go-to summer crusher.”

Revelry’s head brewer, Ryan Coker, had already been playing around with an India Pale Lager, and after some tweaks Up Sh*m Creek was born.

For the design for the brewery’s first ever 12-ounce can, Fleming said the goal was to create something that “encompassed the soul and classic feel of Shem Creek.” The result is an image of a shrimp boat running aground, created by Revelry’s “director of doodles” Chris Kemp.

There will be a release party for the beer at Red’s on June 22 from 5-8 p.m. with live music and the team from Revelry on site. [location-2] [location-1]
