[embed-1]A lot has changed since we were all huddled around the Internet staring at early projections for Hurricane Matthew last year. South Carolina has a new governor, the U.S. has a new president, and maybe we’re all a little wiser about our storm prep.
But as the clouds darken and the cone of uncertainty wags at the Lowcountry’s front porch, at least we can take solace in the one thing that unites the meteorological anomalies: Jason Hurdich, the enthusiastic sign language interpreter who appears alongside S.C. officials as they deliver critical storm updates to the gaggle of S.C. media.
Now, we don’t know what the days ahead hold for South Carolina. Hurricane Irma has already affected a lot of people in the Caribbean and looks likely to at least skirt the Florida coastline as it heads north. But since Jason appeared this afternoon at Gov. Henry McMaster’s initial emergency press conference, it looks like we’ll be seeing a bit more of him again this week.
Just like the police, fire, and medical responders who will be pulling long shifts in the week to come, spokespeople like Jason serve as trusted sources of critical emergency updates.
So, we’d like to go ahead and say thanks to Jason and all the public officials we’ll be hearing from in the next few days. Stay safe.
