It’s almost here. The gentle creak of a new book bind as it’s opened for the first time; the curving, then winding, then whip-lashing routes of a well thought out plot; the delicious, unexpected denouement; the bittersweet resolution. YALLFest 2017 is nearly upon us, and we have all the deets for totally free day one festivities.
Friday Nov. 10
Starting at 2 p.m., go ahead and block off your calendar. First on the docket is a free YALLCrawl. From 2 to 5 p.m., authors will be signing at shops and businesses along Upper King. Stop by Blue Bicycle to grab books and merch, then head to the following venues to get those signatures, plus a little face time with your fave writers: Best Friend Train Museum, Kudu Coffee, PURE Theatre, Dandy Boutique, and Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. Participating authors include Becky Albertalli, Jesse Andrews, Victoria Aveyard, Soman Chainani, E. Lockhart, Patrick Ness, Lauren Oliver, Danielle Paige, Laini Taylor, Angie Thomas, and Nicola Yoon. Additional authors plus specific author locations TBA.
Between 4 and 6 p.m. you have a decision to make. It’s win-win, though, so don’t start slamming books. The first event is a red carpet preview, presented by Penguin Teen, at the Charleston County Library. Seven authors — Brendan Reichs, Rhoda Belleza, Jesse Andrews, Zac Brewer, Jeff Zentner, Ally Condie, and Sabaa Tahir — will walk the red carpet and take part in an interactive discussion in the library teen lounge. The event is free but registration is required; call (843) 805-6903 to sign up.
The second event is Fierce Friday, presented by Macmillan Fierce Reads. From 4 to 6 p.m. at the John L. Dart Library, eight bestselling YA writers will sign books, participate in crafts, games, and giveaways. Participating authors include Marissa Meyer, Kami Garcia, Tomi Adeyemi, Roshani Chokshi, Stephanie Garber, S. Jae-Jones, Caleb Roehrig, and Hilary Reyl. There will also be free banana pudding from Rodney Scott’s BBQ. Event is free but registration is required; call (843) 722-7550 to sign up.
Friday Oct. 20
Can’t wait til November? This Friday at 4 p.m., head to Blue Bicycle for a book signing with Emily Colin. Colin will discuss her new book The Dream Keeper’s Daughter. Moving between modern-day South Carolina and 19th-century Barbados, The Dream Keeper’s Daughter “tells a passionate and sweeping tale of a woman haunted by a loss she can’t explain, and a future she can’t yet choose.” The event is free to attend.
