A group of children made a grisly discovery Sunday afternoon as Charleston County deputies responded to reports of uncovered human remains on Johns Island.

On Oct. 29, just after 2:30 p.m., deputies arrived at 1075 Main Road on Johns Island to investigate a report of possible human remains. Children playing nearby had happened upon what were described as โ€œskeletal remainsโ€ in a wooded area behind a home, according to Maj. Eric Watson with the Charleston County Sheriffโ€™s Office.

Watson said there was no immediate evidence of trauma. The remains were collected by the Charleston County Coronerโ€™s Office to be analyzed to determine the cause of death and the victimโ€™s identity.

The investigation in ongoing.
