The College of Charleston Cougars kick their season off Friday night with a home match-up against non-conference mid-major Siena. A new basketball season is exciting enough by itself, but at least one national sportswriter has the Cougars ranked above even its in-state ACC and SEC rivals as the best team in South Carolina.

The Cougars open their 2017-2018 season at TD Arena Friday night against the visiting Siena Saints after finishing their 25-win campaign last year, losing the Colonial Athletic Association title game against the UNCW Seahawks.

Since taking the helm, Coach Earl Grant’s teams have been built on athletic players pushing the ball on offense and maintaining stifling defense at the other end of the floor. This season, keep an eye on Joe Chealey, Cameron Johnson, and Grant Riller.

Rounding out the top five spots behind CofC this season, CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander says, are South Carolina, Furman, Winthrop, and Clemson. In Norlander’s nationwide ranking, CofC comes in at 48, the top team in the Colonial and ahead of other major conference challengers like Oklahoma (#51), Georgia Tech (#59), N.C. State (#laptop), and Florida State (#70.)

College of Charleston will have a crack at a top 10 team next Monday, taking on former future Cougars Coach Gregg Marshall at Wichita State. Norlander ranks the Shockers #5, while they’re #7 in the national AP poll.
