Southern Living has named 46 “Southerners of the Year” for 2017 including four locals: Steve Palmer, David Shields, Brian Ward, and Louis Yuhasz.
Steve Palmer was named for his nonprofit, Ben’s Friends, an organization that helps those in the hospitality industry dealing with addiction. Named after fellow chef Ben Murray (who took his own life after years of suffering from alcohol addiction), the organization has been growing, with a branch of the group opening in Raleigh.
David Shields and Brian Ward were recognized for their work in collecting and reviving some of the South’s oldest heirloom crops. They’ve brought back the thought to be extinct Bradford watermelon and the Carolina African runner peanut (now commercially available to chefs around the country).
Last but certainly not least, Southern Living recognized affable Charlestonian Louis Yuhasz for his organization Louie’s Kids and the annual fundraiser, Little Chef Big Chef. Louie’s Kids was formed in memory of Yuhasz’ father, who passed away from a stroke related to his obesity; Yuhasz has made it his life’s mission out to help disadvantaged kids struggling with their weight. “With a team of nutrition, behavior, and fitness coaches, his organization provides kids with valuable tools they couldn’t otherwise access and educates families on eating healthy and exercising together,” writes SL.
