The South Carolina Historical Society (SCHS) showcases some pretty well-timed topics in its 2018 Winter Lecture Series “Crises, Conflicts and Triumphs.”
The series is in its 11th year, and brings together authors, historians, and accredited professors from North and South Carolina in engaging academic discussion on a variety of topics, ranging from our state’s struggle with the disease Pellagra to Emancipation to debunking the myths of Blackbeard the Pirate. Every lecture will have opportunities for audience Q&A and discussion.
SCHS is a non-profit organization and the oldest historical society and repository of South Carolina history documents in the state. They’re hosting this lecture series as part of their mission to “expand, preserve and make accessible its invaluable collection, and to encourage interest in pride in the rich historical legacy of South Carolina.” Their current headquarters, the Fireproof Building in downtown Charleston, is undergoing renovations, but will house their new museum once completed.
The lectures will take place in First Baptist Church of downtown Charleston, 48 Meeting St., starting Jan. 17 and continuing each Tuesday through Feb. 20, from 6-7 p.m. Individual tickets are $20 at the door, but for the history buff there’s a season pass deal: $90 for six lectures, if you’re a non-member of SCHS, and $75 for members. And, in the spirit of education, teachers from Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester II counties get in for free with a teacher ID.
