According to the Violence Policy Center, who looked at the data and compiles the annual study, the state has been in the top 10 for two decades. S.C. is doubling its funds for fighting the opioid crisis after receiving $20.5 million from the U.S. Department of Health. According to a spokesman for the S.C. Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services, who is receiving $14.2 million, the state agency will use the money to increase access to medication and treatment, an ad campaign, and financial assistance for those who are seeking treatment.
