[image-1] Good news: Next year’s pledges at College of Charleston will probably be able to pick up a new fly rod and a really-fucking-nice cooler all in one trip down King Street.

Now, Charleston has always been a bit of a mecca for the Southern dandy. But today, the status symbols are a little different. It’s now less about the Ben Silver blazer, the university cufflinks, and the purebred retrievers. These days, it’s more about random-ass luxury lifestyle brands, shooting sports, and since nobody that went to college can afford to buy a house of their own, much smaller, townhouse-friendly purebreds like Boykin spaniels.

Lucky for us, those changes in taste, even when combined with rising rents and King Street storefronts becoming billboards for national companies don’t mean that Charleston will lose all of its outfitters for the well-to-do.

This week, Orvis, which sells high-end gear for the sporting set; and Yeti, which makes really-fucking-nice coolers and bumper stickers, both announced they’re opening stores on King Street, according to separate P&C reports.

So, Orvis and Yeti join their national frat brand brethren Chubbies, which took over the Bob Ellis corner on George Street.

Of course, the bros can and should still support longtime local businesses in Grady Ervin, M. Dumas and Sons, and Ben Silver, which are still holding on tight as the H&Ms, Urban Outfitters, and Anthropologies descend on Charleston’s most popular retail street.
