North Charleston will be on its way to having a new permanent CARTA park-and-ride lot as officials break ground on a new Rivers Avenue facility this week.
On Wed. March 6, the Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority will host a ceremony officially announcing a permanent park-and-ride lot in North Charleston to replace the current facility, which sits on the parking lot of a now-closed K-Mart on Rivers Avenue.
The groundbreaking event will be hosted at the new lot on 8571 Rivers Ave., which is adjacent to the current location.
Upon completion this summer, the free lot will feature 298 parking spaces, along with bathrooms and bike racks for commuters, according to a press release from CARTA.
Bus service will remain the same, according to CARTA spokesman Daniel Brock. The current Rivers Avenue lot is the busiest in the system with an average ridership of 4,000 passengers a month, Brock says.
The current lot is served by CARTA routes Express 1, Route 10, and Route 12. TriCounty Link routes Commuter Solutions 1, Commuter Solutions 2 and B102 also stop by the facility.
One-way Express route fares cost $3.50 per ride. CARTA also offers Express service in and out of downtown to James Island, Mt. Pleasant, West Ashley, and Summerville.
Mike Seekings, the CARTA chairman and member of Charleston City Council, North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey, and the CARTA board of directors will attend Wednesday’s groundbreaking.
