South Carolina’s percent positive of coronavirus cases remained above 20% for the second-straight day on Thursday as health professionals signal a glimmer of hope as they prepare the way for vaccines to be administered in the coming weeks.
The state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) reported 1,754 cases of COVID-19 in South Carolina on Thursday, with 21 deaths. Total cases sit at 208,435, with 4,145 dead with the respiratory virus.
Of the 7,360 cases reported on Thursday, 23.8% were positive, according to DHEC.
“We are at an exciting and hopeful step in combatting the pandemic,” according to the Medical University’s twice-weekly local update. “MUSC Health will receive COVID-19 vaccines soon and will align with CDC and DHEC recommendations for distribution, with health care workers receiving the first vaccinations in December 2020. As supply becomes more readily available, MUSC Health will offer the vaccine to community essential workers and high-risk patients in early 2021.”
MUSC is continuing to urge widespread, proactive testing by asymptomatic residents.
