State health officials reported 3,599 new cases of COVID-19 and 49 deaths Wednesday.
Out of 16,330 new tests reported, 22% were positive. In total, 261,024 people in South Carolina have tested positive for COVID-19, and 4,602 have died from it.
The South Carolina Gamecocks football team will not play in the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl on Saturday against UAB after several members of the team and coaching staff tested positive for COVID-19. According to ESPN, all but one of the Gamecocks offensive coaches would not have been able to be on the sidelines during the game. The bowl has been canceled.
Local craft brewers and distillers woke up in better spirits Wednesday after Congress approved the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act (CBMTRA), which was part of the federal government’s $900 billion COVID-19 aid package.
For distillers, the bill permanently lowers the federal excise tax (FET) rate from $13.50 to $2.70 per proof gallon. One local distiller who sits on the bill’s national committee said, “We’ve been working on it for five years now, so it’s a big moment.”
