Market Street newcomer Tempest was named the country’s top new restaurant by readers of USA Today’s travel guide, 10Best. A list of 20 nominees was chosen by a “panel of experts,” and the top 10 winners were determined over the course of one month by popular vote, with Tempest receiving the most votes, a press release said.

Tempest operates under the 5th Street Group’s umbrella of restaurants which also includes 5Church Charleston. The restaurant, owned by Patrick Whalen, Alejandro Torio and Top Chef alumnus Jamie Lynch, opened in August in the former Harriott Pinckney Home for Sailors at 32C North Market St. next to 5Church and offers a refined take on sustainable South Atlantic seafood.

“The 5th Street Group is both honored and extremely humbled by this recognition,” Lynch said in the release. “It was our hope when we built this restaurant to create something special that people in all walks of life could enjoy. We are very thankful that it appears we have been successful so far.”
