Colossal cookies that are delivered warm in a pizza box are coming to Charleston just as one of downtown’s oldest restaurants announced it will permanently close.
Pennsylvania-based franchise Insomnia Cookies announced it will open a shop at 509 King St. in March where, like the 185 other stores, it will specialize in “warm cookies delivered crazy late.”
The franchise, which was founded in a University of Pennsylvania dorm room by then-student Seth Berkowitz in 2003, also has forthcoming locations in Atlanta, Gainesville and Miami, among others.
Look for nine classic cookie options, including chocolate chunk, snickerdoodle, peanut butter chip and white chocolate macadamia, along with ice cream cookie sandwiches and vegan options — all of which can be ordered online for delivery until 1 a.m. Sunday-Wednesday and 3 a.m. Thursday-Saturday.
As upper King Street gains a cookie chain, it loses the Thai restaurant that paved the way for the countless eateries that line the stretch of King bookmarked by Calhoun and Spring streets. According to Eater Carolinas, Basil Thai Restaurant served its last orders of pad see-eu and masaman curry on Feb. 28, ending its nearly two-decade run downtown. Locally, Basil also has locations in Park Circle and Mount Pleasant, both of which will remain open.
