South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) reported 0 confirmed deaths on Monday for the first time since Nov. 26, 2020 (with the exception of Dec. 25, 2020 and Jan. 1, 2021, when no updates were reported). Only one probable death was announced.
The state moved into Phase 1B last week, allowing vaccine access to a larger pool of individuals. According to DHEC director Dr. Edward Simmer, more than half of the state’s residents are now eligible to receive the vaccination.
Roughly 20% of all South Carolina residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine as of Monday, though 70-80% is needed for herd immunity.

Though no additional deaths were reported, DHEC recorded 310 new cases out of 12,379 individual tests — a percent positive of 3.4%.
