What you need to know: Kaiser Health News reported that government data shows two national pharmacy chains, CVS and Walgreens, are responsible for wasting more vaccines than states, federal agencies and U.S. territories combined.

In late March, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 182,874 wasted doses, nearly half of which were accounted for by CVS and 21% from Walgreens.

Though there is no clear explanation as to why these two chains wasted significantly more vaccine doses than other agencies and areas, some attribute it to disorganized planning during the initial vaccine rollout. CVS reported that “nearly half” of their wasted vaccines were from the early days of the rollout plan when the Trump administration relied on these two national pharmacies to vaccinate people that work and live in long-term care facilities.
