What you need to know today: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director Rochelle Walensky is urging parents to vaccinate their teenage children to protect them from an illness that can be severe even among young people.

A study conducted by the CDC showed that nearly one-third of teenagers hospitalized with COVID-19 during a surge of cases earlier this year required intensive care, and 5% required mechanical ventilation.

South Carolina health officials reported 238 total cases of the coronavirus on Friday (119 confirmed, 119 probable), with 10 confirmed deaths.

With 8,071 tests reported, 2.1% were positive.
