Local singer-songwriter Eric Barnett recently started Songs of the Unsung podcast to promote other local singer-songwriters with interviews and original performances.

Each month Barnett will publish three episodes of different musicians discussing all things music and playing a few tunes. Then he will host a showcase at Freehouse Brewery featuring the interviewees and post footage to YouTube and other streaming platforms.

So far, you can find episodes featuring Noah Grove, Mike Freund, Ben Somewhere, Dan Riley, Chris Dodson and Scotty Oliver.

While there are many open mics around town that already spotlight local musicians, Barnett said, Songs of the Unsung aims to expand that exposure.

“I’m trying to figure out how to get the average person to care about original music,” Barnett said. “I’m trying to figure out how to get [the attention of] people who aren’t musicians, who don’t necessarily know that there’s good original music being written in Charleston.”

The next showcase event takes place Jan. 23 2-5 p.m., featuring Riley, Dodson and Oliver on the bill at Freehouse Brewing with Shaka Shrimp food truck serving Hawaiian food.

Upcoming showcases from 2-5 p.m. are Feb. 13, featuring Danielle Howle, Fleming Moore and Robert Lighthouse, and March 13, featuring Uncle Time’s Bench (aka Tim Falvey), Hollyn Belle Hills and Dana Perry.

Songs of the Unsung is available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Podbean.
